Fletcher, James Cooley (b.1823). Born in Indianapolis
he was a clergyman who spent his early years as a missionary to Haiti and then
four years at a mission in Rio de Janeiro as chaplain missionary of the
American and Foreign Christian Union (1850-54). In 1862 he traveled 2000
miles up the Amazon River collecting objects of natural history for Prof. Louis
Agassiz at Harvard. The result of this expedition was Agassiz’s exploration of
Brazil in 1865. Later Fletcher was U.S. Consul in
Portugal and a missionary at Naples He was the father of novelist Julia
Constance Fletcher. A delightful 7½”x5” pen and ink sketch by James Fletcher
removed from an album. Based on the content of the album, this sketch was made
ca.1869 and is signed “J. C. Fletcher, late of Rio de Janeiro.” Fine
condition and attractively matted, ready for framing. $75.00

Frothingham, Octavius B.
(1822-95). He was an American Unitarian clergyman and a chief
disciple of Theodore Parker. In 1867 he founded the Independent Liberal Church.

my society: thus they are driven back on the Liberals for their patronage..."
6. Nathaniuel Langdon Frothingham
(1793-1870). He was clergyman, instructor at Harvard, pastor of the 1st
Congregational Church (Unitarian) in Boston, a poet and the father of Octavius
Frothingham. ALS, 4pp, 7"x4½", Burlington, MA, 1862 Oct. 1. Fine. A friendly
letter referring to his recent illness. 6 pieces. $100.00

Loyson, Charles (pseud. Pêre
Hyacinthe)(1827-1912).
He was a French preacher, the most celebrated in France, at Notre Dame. In
1869 he split with the Catholic Church and was excommunicated. In 1878 he
founded the Gallican Church. Three ALsS in French, each 1p, 8"x5", each
1869, the year of his excommunication. Plus one brief ALS, 1890 and an ANS.
None are translated. 5 pieces. $100.00

Szold, Henrietta (1860-1945). American Zionist leader, editor,
translator and teacher. In 1888 she founded the Jewish Publication Society
of America and in 1912 founded Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of
America of which she was president (1912-26). In 1920 she moved to Palestine
where she rehabilitated thousands of children during World War II. TLS, 2pp
(separate leaves), 9”x6”, Baltimore, 1902 Jan. 28. Very fine. On the
letterhead of the Jewish Publication Society of America. She writes of a
“galley proof of the translation of the Psalms as
revised by Professor G. L. Kittredge Harvard]” She goes on at length of
the importance of this proof for the publication of a book. $425.00

Wainwright, Jonathan Mayhew (1793-1854). Born in Liverpool, England.
Wainwright immigrated to America, attended Harvard College, studied theology and
was ordained as a minister in the Protestant Episcopal Church. He was a pastor
in several parishes in Boston and New York. In 1852 he was consecrated
provisional bishop of New York in Trinity Church. For many years he was
secretary of the house of bishops, aided in the establishment of the University
of New York and was considered one of the finest pulpit orators of his day. He
had a long distinguished career and was the author of many religious
publications. His descendants are of some note:

His son: Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright (1821-1854) was
a graduate in the first class of the United States Naval Academy. As commander
of the steamer Harriet Lane, during the Civil War, he was killed
by Confederates who boarded his ship in Galveston.

His grandson: Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright
(1849-1879) was a naval officer who was killed at sea by pirates.
·
His great grandson: Robert Powell Page Wainwright
(b.ca.1852) attended the U. S. Military Academy in 1875 and died in service in
the Philippines.

His great-great grandson: Jonathan Mayhew
Wainwright (1883-1953), the son of Robert Wainwright, was a graduate of the U.
S. Military Academy in 1906. During World War II, as lieutenant general, he was
in command of the U. S. troops in defense of the island north of Manila. With
the arrival of the Japanese troops, he was forced withdraw his troops to Bataan
and so protected the troop of southern Luzon. Eventually captured by the
Japanese, he was held prisoner for three years and barely survived.
Presented here are
a set of certificates and diplomas that came from the estate of John R.
Livingston that include three signed by Bishop Wainwright.

Wesleyan University, each 1p & 14”x18” on vellum in Latin, Middletown, CT. Fine
Each with original ribbons and wafer seals. One is a baccalaureate and the other
a master’s degree.

is Wainwright’s license to ordain Livingston “Deacon,

wrinkling of margins. It is Livingston’s diploma from the General Theological
Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Members of the Board of Trustees
including Jonathan M. Wainwright, George Uphold, Protestant Episcopal Bishop of
Indiana and 8 others, as well as 5 professors and the secretary sign it. There
are also 21 unidentified signatures on verso.

Bishop of the Diocese of New York. Partly printed DS, 1p, 13”x19,” Fishkill, NY,
1855 July 24. Fine except for a 2” break in the paper through the red seal. It
is the ordination certificate of John R. Livingston, Jr. as “Priest,” signed by
Potter. 6 documents and biographical information on Bishop Jonathan M.

(1801-89). An American educator who had an appointment at Yale College as
Professor of Greek (1831-71) and was president of Yale from 1846 to 1871.
