(Mexican War) John F. Gould. An Ohio resident in the
iron foundry business. ALS, 3pp, 10”x8,” Franklin Furnace, OH, 1846 Oct. 30.
Fine. Slight age-toning. The integral address leaf bears the Ms “Franklin
Furnace / Oct. 26” with Ms “10.” He writes,
“My own business has suffered pretty severely
from the effects of Mr. Polk’s measures; even in anticipation of the effects. We
shall not make as much by 3000 or 4000$ as we should have done, had the tariff
remained undisturbed – Iron having fallen in price 3 to 4$…if this Mexican war
does not use up Mr. Polk in the course of two years. I am no judge of horse
flesh –that’s all. Not withstanding Santa Fe & Monterey are taken – the fact is
they are not beat even when whipped. But I see I’ve no room for politics – So
good bye…”
