French Minister of War (1793), Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the Norrth (1796), Minister of State under Louis XVIII, Marshal of France and Commander of the Order of Saint Louis (1816). ALS in French, 3pp, 10"x8", Paris, 1809.Fine. The second leaf is inlaid. Plus English translation. The letter is in regard to the mandatory return to military duty by M. Renard. 2 pieces. $80.00

88207. (France) Henry IV of France (1553-1610). King of France (1559-1610) and of Navarre (1572-1610). In 1610 he was assassinated by François Ravaillac.DS in French on vellum, 1p, 9"x8", n.p., nd.(may be in text but not translated). Good. The left 1.5" is mounted to a larger sheet. The ink of the text is moderately light but entirely legible. The signature of Henry IV is very light but has sufficient features for its authentication. The document is headed, "Henry par La grace de Dieu Roy France Et de Navarre..." The leaf is contained in an old hand-made book, sewn a the spine, with hand-crafted paper with 12 leaves. On separate leaves are mounted five engravngs of Henry IV. On another sheet is mounted a printed sheet, an "Extract from the Register of Parliament," headed "1610. Loix Criminelles, LOUIS XIII. 117." It concerns the arrest of François Ravaillac for the assassination of Henry IV, May 21, 1610. Fine. Some marginal defects. 7 pieces. A nice presentation. $475.00

88031. (France) (Louis XV) (1710-74). King of France. MsDS in French with secretarial signature, 1p, 13"x9", Fontainbleu, 1737 Nov. 14. Fine. It is a military appointment promoting Monsieur le Prince de Tingry to lieutenant. It is also signed by his secretary. $130.00

88032. (France) Marie Josephine Louise de Savoie (1753-1819). Wife (queen) of King Louis XVIII of France, the daughter of Victor-Amédée III, King of Sardinia and Marie-Antoinette-Ferdinande of Bourbon-Spain. ADS in French, 1p, 8"x6.5", Versailles, 1787 July 28. Fine. She writes, "I promise to madame Menager to assurance of the succession of her appointemnt and with me for her daughter-in-law. I promise to make a grant to Mr. De Menager, with my personal secretary, of three thousand pounds of income, on which one-third in the name of his wife to take the place of a dowry. 90092. (France) Louis Philippe, Duke d'Orléans (1725-1785). The son of Louis, Duke of Orléans and was known as the Duke of Chartres until his father's death in 1752,. He married Louise Henriette de Bourbon-Conti who bore him a son, Philip (Égalité), Duke of Orléans. MsDS in French, 1p, 14"x10", Royal Palace, Paris 1783 Jan. 25. Very good., Slight fold breaks and marginal wear. A financial document signed as Treasurer. $65.00

90093. (France) Louis Philippe Albert d'Orléans (1834-94). He was the "Count of Paris," pretender to the throne and grandson of King Louis Philippe. He became heir apparent upon the death of his father in 1842, but failed to establish his cliam. Louis Philippe abdicated his throne in 1848 in favor of his grandson. Unsuccessful in the maneuver, young Louis Philippe departed to America and later fought in the Civil War. After the fall of Napoleon III, he returned to France as a pretender to the throne but had to relinquish his rights to the pretenter Count of Chabourd. In 1886 Louis Phillippe was exiled under a new law against pretenders. ALS in English, 4pp, 7"x4", Buckingham, 1891 Jan. 1. Fine. He writes of his lease on an apartment in England and painting, "You may mention that the view of the Loch on the chimney in the sitting room, signed Carlos has been painted by the King of Portugal. As I cannot take it away, I would recommend it to the care of my successor..." $125.00

90094. (France) Marie Amélie Thérése (1782-1866). The queen of Louis Philippe, King of France (1830-1848) and daughter of Fedinand IV, King of Naples. ALS in French signed only with her paraph, 1p, 7"x5", Neuilly, 1829 Aug. 4. Fine. She writes, "Here is the account for the improvements which you made for me as well as the 918 francs 30 centimes that I owe you. I have saved the two paid invoices to send to Naples. I thank you for everything..." $50.00

90095. (France) Marie Amélie Thérése (1782-1866). MsDS as Queen, 1p, 12"x8", Paris, 1835 Feb. 25. Very fine. Tipped to a mount. She writes to her cousin saying that she is well aware of his loyalty, knows he has her best interests at heart, his Christmas time letter pleased her and that she pray to God to keep him. Scarce. $100.00

90148. (France) Poincairé, Raymond Nicholas Landry (1860-1934). A French statesman who held various ministry positions including Education, Finance and Public Instruction. He was vice president of the Chamber (1895-97), Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1912) during which time he helped prepare France for World War I. He was Presdient of France from1914 to 1920 and again in 1922. He was later elected to the Senate. ALS in French, 1p, 8"x5", Paris, 1933 Aug. 24.Very fine. Plus original stamped envelope with holograph address. He writes to Franklyn Parys thanking him for his letter and indicates that he will send him an extract of one of his publications. 2 pieces. $90.00

90076. (Germany) Bunsen, Christian Karl Josias, Baron von (1791-1860). A Prussian diplomat, theologian, and scholar, referred to as the "Chevalier." He held many positions in the government including resident minister to Rome and ambassdor to Berne. He also served at the London embassy. He wrote on language, law, religion and history. ALS in German script,1.5pp, 8"x5", Rome, 1836 Aug. 18. Fine.To a doctor. Not translated. Plus ALS in German script, not translated, 1.5pp, 8"x5", Heidelberg, 1857 Dec. 23. Fine. 90178. (Germany) Author with illegible signature. ALS in German script (with English translation), 1p, 12"x8", Bueckeburg, 1674 Oct. 16. Fine. He writes to "The Noble Sir Johann Bernhardt Wipperman, High Warden of Forests...You will recall in what manner the distraint of the tenants of the tithing has been conducted and that some of the tenants have tried to effect a remision of their debts and that these poor people now ask for a release of their pawns [cattle] which have been witheld from them for so long and are nearly starved to death and perished. Wherefor we have wanted to entreat our Benevolent Lord to return the cattle for the above reasons to these poor pople. Commending you to the care of God, our manganimous Master..." 88012. (Great Britain) Bagot, Sir Charles (1781-1843). British diplomat. In succession he was under Secretaryof State for Foreign Affairs, Minister to France, United States, Russia and Holland. In1841 became Governor-General of Canada. While Minister to the U.S. he helped negotiate the Rush-Bagot Convention. ALS, 2pp, 9"x7", Brefield (?), 1829 Jan. 29. Very fine. It concerns a planned dinner engagement. $85.00

88013. (Great Britain) Balfour, Sir Arthur, 1st Earl of (1848-1930). British statesman who served as Scottish Secretary, Irish Secretary,1st Lord of the Treasury, Prime Minister (1902-06), 1st Lord of theAdmiralty and Foreign Secretary. In 1917 he issued the Balfour Declaration for establishing a home for the Jewish people of Palestine. TLS, "Balfour," 1p, 9"x7", Prestonkirk, Scotland, 1926 Sept. 24. Fine. He writes to Lady Pentland, "I am delighted to hear that your son is kind enough to act as my Page...It is not a very onerous duty, though, as far as the Chancellor is concerned, a very necessary one...I am rather stupid about matters of dress, but I am confidant that a black velvet suit will be quite correct." $90.00

He was a member of the Reichstag (1921-28, but left Germany when Hitler came into power. Includes two ALsS, 2pp,1889 (Prussia) and 1909 (German Embassy, D.C.), both with social content. Also one envelope with holograph address, a TLS, 1916 responding to an autograph request, his printed calling card and a S on a letterhead of the German Embassy, 1916. 6 pieces. $80.00

He designed the one-horse Brougham. ALS, 1p, 7"x4.5", n.p., n.d. Fine. Address leaf is inlaid. It concerns an appointment. PLUS a free franked address panel, 3"x6", York, 1828. William Bulwer, negotiator of the Clayton-Bulwer treaty

90075. (Great Britain) Bulwer, William Henry Lytton Earle, Baron Dalling & Bulwer (1801-72). An English diplomat, author, M.P., Ambassador toSpain and Minister to Washington (1849-52). He negotiated the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty (1850) that pledged neutrality on the projected canal across Central America. He was an author of biographical and political works. 1. ALS as Ambassador to U.S., 2pp, 7"x4.5", 1850. Very good. Small archival paper repair on verso. He invites a friend to visit him in Washington. 2. ALS, 4pp, n.p., n.d. [ca.1856]. Very good. Slight soiling and irregular right margin on 2nd leaf from previous mounting. Does not afffect text. He is annoyed at pressureon him to pay off a mortgage, "In regard to my brother's security for the covenant I see harm in that. He only covenants that I am not a rogue..." 3. ALS, 2pp, 7"x5", 1871 Jan. 11. Good. there is moderate fading of the text but is legible. The S is fine. Routine content. 4. ALS of S. L.(?) Bulwer, not further idenrtified. 90110. (Great Britain - Royalty). Princess Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck. She and Prince Francis, Duke of Teck were the parents of Victoria Mary (Queen Mary), wife of King George V of Great Britain. Mary Adelaide was the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. ALS, 3pp, 7"x4.5",White Lodge, Richmond Park, 1875 Aug. 27. Fine. She writes to Lord Granville, "I write a line in the Prince's stead, as he is very busy with his...speeches, so ask you to arrange for a slight alteration in the order of toasts...". 90192. (Great Britain - Royalty). George IV (1762-1830). King of England (1820-30). Due to the incapacity of Geroge III, he was regent from 1811 to 1820. DS, 2pp, 14"x9", Carlton House [London], 1817 June 25. Fine. Some wear. Fine intact seal. George IV signs at the top with a dark bold 5" signature. It is a "Warrant to the Judge Advocate General, for holding courts martial, to consist of Officers of the Guards or other Regiments," addressed to John Beckett, Judge Advocate General. It is also signed by Sidmouth, Home Secretary. $550.00

88038. (Guatemala) Justo Rufino Barrios (1835?-1885). President of Guatemala (1873-85). He was killed in a battle with the Salvadorean Army. MsLS as President, in Spanish, 1p, 10"x8", Guatemala, 1885 Feb. 15. Fine. It is a brief letter to General J. Victor Savala, not trtanslated, but refers to Dr. José Esteban Aparicio and Dr. Rosa C. de Robles. Plus a second related document in German script. 2 pieces. $90.00

Francisco Franco, Spanish dictator, writes to King Farouk of Egypt

90183. (Spain) Franco, Francisco. A Spanish general and head of state. At age 32 he became a general in command of the Spanish forces in Morocco. After assembling military power over a number of years, in 1936 he led a military coup and become head of the government as a Falangist. Civil War followed vs. the Nationalists, ending in victory for Franco in 1939. Although pro-axis, Spain did not actively participate in World War II. In 1969, Franco turned the reigns of government to Prince Juan Carlos, and thus re-established a monarchy. MsLS in Spanish, 2pp, 13"x9", Madrid.Very fine with intact embossed seal of state.
