For not supporting the coup of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte III, Thiers was arrested and expelled from France. After returning, in 1863 he was elected to the legislature. He opposed the disastrous Franco-Prussian War, but was rewarded for his position later by becoming Premier of the Republic. His conservative views eventually forced him to resign. Thiers’ books on the French Revolution and Napoleon were written from the upper bourgeois perspective, and although very popular at the time are regarded today as superficial and inaccurate eulogies of these periods. He nevertheless continued in the political arena until his death in 1877. MsDS in French as Minister of Interior, 3pp, 12”x8”, Paris, 1835 April 11. Fine. Slight age-toning.  It is a lengthy letter headed “Confidentielle” and is addressed to “Préfet de la Côte d’Or” on the subject of the work of the Commission on the Investigation of Tobacco.
