A railroad executive and manufacturer. With his brother, Oakes Ames, he created the Union Pacific Railroad and later, was its president as well as president of the Sioux City & Pacific Railroad Company. 90101.  (FRENCH STATESMEN). Includes, 1. FRANÇOIS PIERRE GUILLAUME GUIZOT (1788-1874). He was a French statesman and historian. He was one of the leading bourgeois intellectuals in the Revolution of 1830. From 1832 to 1837 he was Minister of Public Instruction and from 1840 to 1848 was a leading power in the French govern­ment. After the February Revolution of 1844, he devoted the rest of his life to writing. Included in his works was the History of the Revolution in England, as well as works on the French Revolu­tion and biographies of Shakespeare, Peel, Cromwell and Washington. ALS in French, 2pp, 7"x5", Paris, 1855 Nov. 19. Fine. A letter primarily of literary content, referring to the Academy and a number of authors. Plus fine steel engraving of Guizot.  2. HENRI BENJAMIN CONSTANT DE REBECQUE (1767-1830). He was a French statesman, author and scholar. As a member of the Tribunate, he was banished in 1802 for opposi­tion to Napoleon. Later, having modified his views, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. He was a friend of Goethe, Talleyrand, Mme d Staël and other eminent persons. ALS in French, 1p, 7"x4½", Paris, 1829 July 18. Fine with English translation. Address leaf bears cds with date and holograph address. He writes to Monsieur Tickel, "At the time I received you letter, the Chamber was so tired and in a hurry to finish that I was not able to make use of your notes about the activities of the postal service and about book selling...I thank you for this information..."3. Plus ALS in French, 1p, 6½"x4", n.p., 1804 Jan. Fine. He writes a brief letter to his friend Professor Schlichtegroll. JEAN-GUILLAUME  HYDE  DE  NEUVILLE, (1776-1857). He was a French diplomat and politician who served in the French Chamber of Deputies and as Minister of Marine. From 1816 to 1821 he was French Ambassador to the United States and arbitrated a dispute between the U.S. and Great Britain. ALS in French as Ambassador, 3½pp, 10"x8", Washing­ton, 1819 March 4. Fine. Plus transcription and English transla­tion. He writes to a count, "I...wrote you a very long letter...M. Pétry came to Washington. I tore up, with pleasure, what had pained me to write, what you could not have read without pain. I have forgotten the mistakes of M. Pétry...Now I turn to the important matter...Now that all the Spanish business is over be good enough to read through everything...& write directly to me what you think of the job I did. The approval of the King is my first aim; after that...of the loyal Duke Richelieu. Wherever I may be in the future, write to me..." 4. COUNT LOUIS MATHIEU MOLE (1781-1855). He was a French politician who gained favor of Napoleon, was made count and Minister of Justice (1815). In 1817 he was appointed Minister of Marine by Louis XVIII, Minister of Foreign Affairs by Louis Philippe and Prime Minis­ter (1836-39). ALS, 1p, 6"x4", n.p., n.d. Fine. A brief social letter. 5. CHARLES FORBES RENÊ de TYRON MONTALEMBERT, COUNT de (1810-70). He was a noted French statesman, a man of letters, author and orator. He is most remembered for his liberal approach toward Catholicism. He served in the Chamber of Deputies where his liberal views were in conflict with the Pope Pius IX on one side and the free-thinking liberals on the other. ALS in French on mourning stationery, 2pp, 7"x4", n.p., 1851 May 12. Fine. Plus an English translation of letter. Some mounting traces on left margin. He asks his doctor to change his appointment. 6. ÊTIENNE DENIS PASQUIER, DUKE DE (1767-1862). He was a French statesman who was named Master of Petitions in the Parliament of 1787. During the French Revolution he was a moderate who avoided public confrontations. He was arrested in 1794 for his views but released the same year. Under Napoleon's admin­istra­tion he became council­or of state and prefect of police. He later served under Louis XVIII and after the Revolution of 1830 became president of the Chamber of Peers. 90099.  (FRENCH AUTHORS). Includes PIERRE JANE DE BÉRANGER (1780-1857). A celebrated French songwriter, poet and protégé of Luicien Bonaparte, Napoleon’s brother. Béranger was imprisoned twice for his republican views expressed in poetry. 1.  ALS in French, 1p, 8”x5”, Paris, 1848. Very good. Slight age-toning and weak folds. Is signed as vice resident of the Central Commission for Gifts and offerings to the Country. 2. ALS in French, 3pp, n.p., 1826, April 11. Fine. Some ink show-through and ½”x1” blank corner missing. It is a social letter about his return to Paris, friends, acquaintances and his disabilities. Plus English translation (partial). 3. VICTOR CHERBULIEZ (1829-99). French author and politician. After one of his pieces offended Napoleon III, he went into exile from 1851 to 1859. He later served in the French Senate. He wrote on French law as well as an accurate Histoire politique de Stats-Unis - 1620-1789 (History of the United States). 1. ALS in French, 2pp, 8"x5", Glatigny, Versailles, 1871 Aug. 27. Fine with English translation. "The populace of Paris is disarmed, tired, but it is restless...there may still be some agita­tion...Mr. Thiers replies to us that the order will not be disturbed, but who can answer for the life and power of Mr. Thiers?..."2. ALS in French, 1p, 8"x5", n.p., 1866 Dec. 27. Fine with English translation." The most literal translation is that of Mr. Victor Hugo, Jr. the most French is that of Mr. Guizot. For a French­man who wants to read English by means of transla­tion the first is better. For those, not knowing English want to know Shakespeare, the second is preferable . . ."3. He directed the Comédie Française (1885-1913) and in 1888 was elected to the French Academy. He wrote plays of the Revolu­tion, novels and histori­cal works. 1. EMILÉ DESCHAMPS, (1791-1871). He was a French poet and dramatist. In 1818 he produced two comedies, Selmours et Florian and Le Tour de Faveur, both of which were a great success. With Victor Hugo and others, he founded the Musée Français in 1827. Deschamps published a collection of poems titled French and Foreign Studies. ALS in French, 1p, 8"x5", Paris, n.y. July 4. To Henry Berthoud he writes, "I have learned, through friends, that the Musée de familles has been good, kind and extremely favor­able toward my brother and me. Nothing surprises me; you are there! But I am writing expressly to give you my deepest thanks...Your approval stems a bit from friendship...and is thus all the more precious...:" PAUL MARGUERITE (1860-1918). He was a French novelist who, in collaboration with his brother Vincent, wrote a number of novels including Un Êpoque dealing with the Franco-Prussian War. ALS in French, 1½pp, 5"x4½", 1898 Sept. 12. Fine. He responds to an autograph request. PROSPER MERIME (1803-70). He was a French novelist, playwright and historian, noted for his Chronicle of the Reign of Charles IX (1829). His reputation is based primarily on his short story novels including Columbia Carmen & Mateo Falcone. Sorel was most noted for his L'Europe et la révolution française (1885-1904). He also wrote biographies of Madame de Stäel, Montesquieu and many other historical works. He was Comptroller of the Royal Laboratory at Woolwich. Congreve was made a baronet in 1812. He was the father of William Congreve, the inventor of the Congreve rocket. Curtis commanded the Queen Charlotte in the battle with the French fleet on the "First of June 1794." He was made a baronet for gallantry. ALS, 1p, 9"x7", 1815 Jan. 22. Fine. "I have had the honour to receive your letter of the 20th instant requesting to have it signified to you the supporters I am desirous of having to my Arms, in consequence of my being nominated and constituted a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath; and I beg there may be assigned to me for my supporters accordingly, Two Greyhounds Reguardant Argent - Spotted Sable - Collars & Chains...the letter to his Grace the Earl of Marshall is signed by me and returned herewith..." CHARLES RUSSELL (1832-1900). He was Lord Chief Justice of England. ALS, 2pp, 8"x5", Paris, 1899 Sept. 11. Fine. Minor wear. Small fold breaks on verso repaired with archival paper. He regrets that he has been too busy to write, but "finally I come to the conclusion that until I get this Venezuelan arbitration off my mind I can do nothing else.." As one of the arbitrators in the British Guiana / Venezuela boundary dispute, Russell `took little part in the discussion' but directed attention to the vital points (DNB). Plus photo (half­tone) of Russell. JOHN ARBUTHNOT FISHER, 1ST BARON (1841-1920). He was a British admiral who served in the Crimean War, Chinese War and in the bombardment of Alexan­dria (1882). From 1887 to 1890 he was A.D.C. to Queen Victoria and later served a chief of North American and West Indian stations, the Mediterranean and was First Sea Lord from 1903 to 1909. 90171. (AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION - SOCIAL REFORMERS & CLERGY) Includes SIR THOMAS FOWELL BUXTON (1786-1845). He was an English social reformer and abolitionist leading the Antislavery Party. In 1833, his efforts in Parliament led to the abolishment of slavery in the British colonies. ALS on verso of an address leaf, 6"x7", n.p., n.d. Fine. He writes that he is sending this address leaf on which is "Macintosh's writing." The address leaf is in the hand of and free franked by I. Macintosh. There is a crown cds, London, 1821 Jan. 26. Fine. PIERRE ÊTIENNE LOUIS DUMONT (1759-1829). He was a Swiss social philosopher and jurisconsult. He gained a reputation as a preacher in St. Petersburg and later was tutor to Lord Shelburne's sons in London.  He wrote many of Mirabeau's speeches and was best known as editor and expositor of Jeremy Bentham's works including Traité de la Legislation (1801). He lived in Geneva from 1814 to 1829 where he as a member of the Representative Council. ALS "Pr.D." in French, 1p, 6"x5½", n.p., n.d. [1797]. Very good. Corner tipped to another sheet. Small marginal defects not affecting text. He writes to Jeremy Bentham in regard to getting together. MINOT J. SAVAGE (1841-1918). He was a notable Unitarian clergyman and author who was a pastor in Massachu­setts and Missouri before settling into parishes in Boston (1874-96) and New York (1896-1906). American humorist and dramatist. S on 2½"x4" card. Fine. POULTNEY BIGELOW (b.1855). He was an American author, journalist, correspondent, editor and traveler and the son of John Bigelow. He became an intimate friend of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and his family and became convinced that Wilhelm was innocent of the charge as an instiga­tor of World War I. ALS in French & English, 2pp, 8½"x12½", Malden on Hudson, NY, 1942 July 3. Fine. He writes to a friend Franklyn, "A thousand thanks for having sent me your work on SHRADY. I knew GRANT and also Sheridan and Sherman, but I am an historian and also a disciple o a very wise man who prevented the Romans from establishing triumphal arches except for those who were beaten by the enemy on another front. There­fore I cannot erect a Valhalla for the Generals who did nothing more than carry off victo­ries from fellow citizens too few in number - three against one!" On the Civil War he writes, "The South was in the right in seceding from a state which elected as President a man pledged to violate the Constitution by perpetuating a tariff that en­riched northern manufacturers at the expense of Southern planters. The South also resented the presumption of Lincoln in meddling with slavery and provoking a servile insurrection when every able bodied `Confederate' was at the front. The wise men had no `enthusiasm' for a war against their own people in 1861. `Enthusiasm' was artificially created, then as now, by politicians and interested pluto­crats!...Vive la France! Whatever flag waves over the tomb of Napoleon, Paris cannot change any more than the Acropolis of Athens or the great Circus at Rome..." It is written on a title page of The Love Affairs of Great Musicians, "To Leonard Liebling the thorough musician / the brilliant writer / the generous friend / from Rupert Hughes." CHARLES RAMM KENNEDY (1871-1950). He was an English play­wright most noted for The Servant in the House, The Necessary Evil and The Idol Breaker. ALS, 1p, 7½"x6", New York, 1909 March 4. Fine. He is unable to address the Actor's Church Alliance. EDWARD VERRALL LUCAS (b.1868). He was an English essayist, traveler and art critic who wrote novels and works on art. ALS, 1p, 7"x5", New York, 1934 April 11. Fine. He is unable to agree to a lecture. BON LOUIS HENRI MARTIN (1810-83). He was a French historian, novelist and statesman during the 3rd Repub­lic.
