Seaport Autographs was founded by Norman F. Boas in 1976 and since that time has issued 118 catalogs covering a wide variety of subjects, as indicated in our directory at the left side of this window. We have sold large collections to universities and libraries as well as to many individual collectors throughout the United States and the world. All of our descriptions are based on The Manuscript Society Criteria for Describing Manuscripts and Documents, a system designed for precisely describing the material we offer. Since we do not operate an open shop, we will be happy at any time to forward scanned images of those items not illustrated. We are a charter member of the Professional Autograph Dealers Association (PADA) and also members of the Manuscript Society, and the Universal Autograph Collector's Club (UACC). All mandate the highest standards of ethics in the marketplace.

Warranty: All items we sell carry a full money-back guarantee of authenticity and any item which is not as described or in which you are not completely satisfied may be returned within three days of receipt. Using the Manuscript Society Criteria, our descriptions are precise and allow our customers a detailed preview of each document with listings of the author, content, number of pages, sizes, place and dates. The condition of each is graded into one of the six categories mentioned on the Abbreviations page.

First English Translation in 125 years of  the Arctic Exploration by Franz Boas  from German Newspaper Accounts at the time (1883-1884).

Boas, Franz (1858-1942). Arctic explorer and founder of American anthropology. Arctic Expedition / 1883-1884 / Translated German Newspaper Accounts of My Life with the Eskimos, edited by Norman F. and Doris W. Boas, 66pp, Mystic, Connecticut, 2009. At the age of 25 Boas sailed to Baffin Island with the primary goal of mapping this huge island for the first time. He was also interested to learn how the inhabitants of this place accommodated to their harsh environment. He essentially “lived like an Eskimo” and gathered encyclopedic cartographic and ethnologic records of his travels there. His expedition was financed in part by a German newspaper, The Berliner Tageblatt. In return Boas agreed to submit narratives of his experiences in the Arctic for exclusive publication in the paper. Published only in German, this is the first translation of his notable expedition to be published in English after almost 125 years. It is illustrated and offered in an attractive binder in a copyrighted limited edition printed promptly to order by Seaport Autographs.  $15.00 + $5.00 (Postage and handling - U.S.)

Maxwell Boas was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1978. Raised in Boulder, Colorado, he moved to Kansas City after high school where he studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute. He later moved to California where he focused on illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors distinction in 2001. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Maxwell is an Art Director at DreamWorks Animation on an upcoming feature film set to release in 2010. He has also worked as a Visual Development artist for DreamWorks on such titles as Kung Fu Panda, Flushed Away, and Over the Hedge. In his personal work, Maxwell’s primary media is traditional oil painting. His subject matter focuses on urban landscapes and man’s daily interaction with nature. He tries to capture the everyday unnoticed scenes such as a man on a cell phone walking under a freeway, a silhouette of a shopper in a parking lot, or a tourist taking a photograph from a ‘scenic outlook.’ His depiction of light and color, both natural and artificial, are thoughtfully choreographed to evoke the overall mood of the moment. He draws inspiration from the many diverse people and environments that surround him in Los Angeles.

NEW PUBLICATION

ABRAHAM LINCOLN. ILLUSTRATED BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY. FAMILY AND ASSOCIATES. 1809-1861, by Norman F. Boas, M.D. 518pp, Seaport Autographs Press, Mystic Connecticut, 2009.

Norman Francis Boas, M.D. is a retired physician and author. He has written over 40 scientific papers and is a co-author of several books on clinical medicine and biochemistry, biographies of First Lady Jane Pierce, and anthropologist Franz Boas, a book on Stonington, Connecticut during the American Revolution, local histories of Wilton, Connecticut, and the Adirondacks, as well as numerous articles on American history, and Abraham Lincoln.       The author has been a collector of letters, documents, and manuscripts of hundreds of acquaintances, friends, and associates that Abraham Lincoln had during his pre-presidential years, as well as some of Lincoln’s ancestors and distant relatives. To appreciate the full significance of these papers, he consulted diverse sources to create biographical data on this group. His primary interest was not only in collecting papers of historical interest, but to also acquire examples of the handwriting of these individuals.  Thus, for those interested in a biographical reference volume that encompasses the lives of the famous and many lesser know associates and acquaintances of Abraham Lincoln, Norman Boas has created this biographical dictionary. Each entry is illustrated with a signature, a letter or a document signed by each biographee. Included are many scarce examples, some with important historical content. There are many volumes dedicated to the autographs of famous and distinguished Americans, but none that focus on this Lincoln group. If considered in its entirety, this volume is essentially a peripheral biography of Abraham Lincoln. It includes approximately 625 brief biographies and cites hundreds of other individuals.

The author “has labored on this project long and hard…The 518-page volume has 625 brief biographies of Lincoln associates with autograph examples of each… Norm has done the collecting and academic community a great service by assembling this vast store or information in a compact, easily referenced volume which deserves to be a standard reference. It is unlike any other Lincoln book out there…”                                                                                                   Jonathan Mann, The Rail Splitter

Mind boggling, indeed, is the importance of this volume to collectors of Lincolniana…The whole field of Lincolniana autographs has been enlarged by Boas’s Illustrated Biographical Dictionary, for now scores of individuals difficult to pinpoint and identify may be properly named...Boas’s contribution may well transform and enlarge what before was a vaguely defined collecting field…Any Lincolnist would be hard pressed to name an early Lincoln friend, neighbor or colleague and not find him in its pages…In a field of Lincolniana, so extensive that it’s rare to find anything that strikes one as having never been done before, Boas’s Abraham Lincoln...manages to create a new and fascinating niche                                    William Butts, Manuscripts
